5 Tricks to Sewing With African Wax Fabrics
According to a 2012 study, African print fabrics were given names that were very symbolic and abstract to symbolize the fabrics as a way to communicate visually instead of with words.
African wax fabrics have become even more popular in the last few years, but some people are still wondering how they can sew them in a proper way.
Keep reading to find out some of the best tips to learn how to sew this unique type of fabric!
1. Remove Creases
One of the first things that you should do is to remove all the creases from the fabric. At first, it might be difficult, because when you try to dry iron this wax fabric, the wax will start to come off.
Instead, try using a steam iron to get out stubborn wrinkles.
2. Get a Heavy-Duty Needle
This wax fabric is a lot heavier than other fabrics you are probably used to working with.
You will have to buy a new heavy-duty needle that has a size of at least 100/16. You may even want to get one as big as 100/18.
You will probably want to get thicker thread as well. If you have used thread before for jean topstitching, you can use that type of thick thread to be able to sew through this fabric.
3. Clean Your Machine
As you sew the wax fabric, some of the wax might end up building up on the surface of the machine. When this buildup happens, it could jam the machine or stop it from working.
If you are going to be sewing a large part of the fabric, take breaks every now and then to wipe down the machine and clean it.
When you are done sewing a specific piece of the fabric, make sure that you wipe your machine down before you sew any regular fabric as well.
4. Enjoy the Vibrant Colors
Many people are not used to the vibrant colors that come with the African wax fabrics, and they are not sure exactly how to sew them.
You do not always have to follow the patterns that are on the fabric. Just treat it as you normally would with any other type of pattern.
5. Do Not Use Pins
Many people use pins when they are sewing regular fabric, but you really do not want to poke holes in this fabric.
Instead of using pins, you can use small clips or clamps to hold your fabric in place while you sew it.
Depending on the fabric you have, the wax should be sticky enough that you do not even need to use a pin.
